Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

My magazine could be distributed by the institution IPC Media or Bauer Media Group as these are the institutions which distribute NME magazine and Kerrang! magazine which I loosely based my magazine on as they're two of the biggest, most popular music magazines in the industry. My magazine would be sold in small newsagents and shops, as well as supermarkets and shops which sell music-related merchandise as this would target the widest audience possible and generate the most profit. Both IPC Media and Bauer Media Group have successfully published two best-selling music magazines of the same genre as mine so I therefore believe either one would lead my magazine to be successful.

Advertising

Supermarkets

Small Shops

I would advertise my magazine on popular, related music channels such as Kerrang! and Scuzz and on the internet. In order to make these advertisements successful I could use a special offer, such as a subscription offer which would make the magazine seem better value for money and therefore potentially attract more customers as they will then think they're getting more for their money.

I would stock my magazine in large supermarkets as there are hundreds of customers each day which could be interested in my magazine. Various other music magazines are sold in large supermarkets however, so I'd have to make sure that Noize stood out amongst its competition. I could also have subscription offers shown around the magazine area in the supermarket in order to influence my audience to purchase the magazine as a special offer would make them feel as though they're getting a good deal.

It would be a good idea to also sell my magazine in various smaller shops as these are often where teenagers (my target audience) stereotypically visit more often in comparison to larger supermarkets.

Online

There will be a website for my magazine - www.noize.com - where my readers would be able to view an online copy of the magazine, plus featured content which would be unseen in the magazine and updated daily. There would be a fee for the magazine, but it would be less than what my audience would pay if they bought a physical copy, as I wouldn't need to pay for ink, paper, distribution, etc.

Special Editions

Every so often I would release a special edition of the magazine which wouldn't keep with the conventional house style colour scheme - red, white and black - just to keep my viewers interested and to keep my magazine fresh and unique.
